LayerZero’s integration with Cronos (CRO) EVM and zkEVM enables cross-chain bridges with over 115 blockchain networks, enhancing interoperability and liquidity for Cronos users.

LayerZero, a prominent cross-blockchain interoperability protocol, has announced its integration with Cronos (CRO) EVM and Cronos zkEVM, marking a significant milestone for cross-chain connectivity. This move, announced by Cronos Labs and LayerZero, is expected to enhance the development of cross-blockchain applications and bridges, thereby connecting Cronos users to the extensive liquidity of over 115 blockchain networks, including Ethereum and Solana.

Integration Details

The integration covers both mainnet and testnet networks, allowing developers to create and expand bridges and tokens across numerous blockchain networks. This development is anticipated to attract hundreds of applications utilizing LayerZero, thereby offering their services to Cronos users and providing access to billions of dollars in crypto assets securely hosted on Cronos.

Impact on Cronos EVM and zkEVM

For Cronos EVM, a leading EVM-compatible layer 1 network built on the Cosmos SDK, this integration facilitates seamless asset transfers between the Cosmos SDK ecosystem and other EVM-compatible blockchains. The Cronos EVM leverages the Inter Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol for interoperability with the Cosmos ecosystem.

Meanwhile, Cronos zkEVM, the first Elastic Chain (layer 2) to launch on mainnet after ZKSync Era, will benefit from the native Ethereum bridge shared with over 10 other Elastic chains. This provides users with faster cross-blockchain transfers across a wide range of layer 1 and layer 2 networks.

Statements from Industry Leaders

Ken Timsit, Managing Director of Cronos Labs, emphasized the importance of cross-chain interoperability as a priority since the project’s inception. He expressed optimism about the integration’s role in enhancing connectivity between crypto projects and traditional finance in 2025. Bryan Pellegrino, CEO of LayerZero Labs, highlighted Cronos zkEVM as one of the first Elastic Chains for LayerZero’s expansion, underscoring the goal of connecting different types of chains.

Future Developments

While LayerZero primarily serves as a developer tool, these new cross-blockchain functionalities are not yet available to most end users. However, further announcements are expected soon. New bridging options will be added to the official Cronos bridge portals, including new CRO/zkCRO and other token bridging options between Cronos EVM and Cronos zkEVM.

Cronos Labs is actively supporting developers interested in leveraging these new functionalities. Beyond token bridging, the focus is on supporting decentralized applications using LayerZero’s technology to develop innovative use cases such as cross-chain prediction markets, tokenization of real-world assets, and cross-chain lending protocols.
