Filecoin Powers Long-Term AI Storage Through CryptoModels

  • CryptoModels provides long-term access to AI models by storing them permanently on Filecoin’s decentralized storage network.
  • The models run on-device with no telemetry, ensuring user privacy and preventing centralized control or deletion.

Typically, the AI models we rely on today can suddenly disappear or change due to a single decision from a central service. Imagine working on an important project and then the model you’re using suddenly becomes unavailable. Such situations are no longer just a worry—they’re a reality for many developers.

But now, a new approach is trying to solve the problem at its root. The project, CryptoModels, comes from the Eternal AI initiative and is powered by the Filecoin storage network.

AI models are often updated or removed without warning by centralized services. With CryptoModels, @CryptoEternalAI gives developers long-term access by storing files on Filecoin, where they can’t be arbitrarily modified or taken down. pic.twitter.com/34DEtLHZNC

Instead of storing models on a server where they can be pulled at any time, CryptoModels archives AI files on the Filecoin network. This means that the files cannot be modified or deleted by anyone. Not only that, but each stored model can also be accessed directly via CLI or desktop, without having to go through a complicated API system.

Models like DeepMind’s Gemma 3n, which is known for its memory-efficient and multimodal support, can now be run locally thanks to CryptoModels. The CNF previously reported that Eternal AI decided to store Gemma 3n on Filecoin, making it available in a decentralized way and still verifiable in the long term.

Filecoin Empowers AI Collaboration Without Central Servers

Many developers have had to ‘surrender’ when their favorite AI models were suddenly pulled due to updates, licensing, or other internal reasons. With CryptoModels, that control is taken back. And when it comes to secure, durable storage, Filecoin is no stranger.

On the other hand, as we reported earlier, a few days ago Filecoin announced a new feature that allows AI agents to collaborate over a shared memory system—with no central servers and no APIs at all. For governments and large enterprises, this is not just a technical solution. They are starting to use Filecoin to store sensitive data so that it remains available long-term, even in the event of a data center failure.

Furthermore, the collaboration between Filecoin and Theoriq in mid-June demonstrated a bigger ambition: to build decentralized AI agents with models and decisions that are fully verifiable on-chain. This means that not only is the data tamper-proof, but the workflow and AI results are also publicly available.

By combining Filecoin’s tamper-proof public storage with Theoriq’s autonomous architecture, AI agents can perform complex tasks automatically, without relying on a central system.

CryptoModels Turns Borrowed AI Into Permanent Access

One thing that often gets overlooked in discussions about AI is the fact that most models today are simply borrowed, not actually owned or controlled by the user. CryptoModels changes that. Instead of being a “use and forget” approach, this makes AI models like library books that will always be available, even after the publisher goes out of business.

This approach isn’t yet an industry standard. But recent trends suggest that more and more developers are getting tired of relying on centralized servers. Filecoin, once known primarily for blockchain storage, is now starting to venture into AI territory with an approach that feels more down-to-earth.

Meanwhile, as of press time, FIL is swapped hands at about $2.25, down 2.83% over the last 24 hours, with daily trading volume at about $139.25 million.
