OpenAI’s new Agents API enables developers to build scalable cloud agents with Codex-powered orchestration and tool capabilities.

OpenAI has launched the Agents API in public beta, offering developers a powerful toolkit for creating and running cloud-based AI agents. Built on the Codex harness, this API simplifies the development of long-running, multi-functional agents, enabling tasks such as real-time orchestration, tool usage, and scalable infrastructure management. The announcement marks a significant step in OpenAI’s broader push to make Codex a foundational agent platform.

Key to the Agents API is its flexibility. Developers can deploy agents using OpenAI’s managed sandboxes or their own infrastructure, with integrations available from partners like Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, and Oracle. This modularity ensures that agents can be tailored to specific workflows, offering options for custom compute, storage, and cost configurations.

What the Agents API Offers

The Agents API uses the same underlying Codex harness that powers OpenAI’s own tools, such as ChatGPT for Work. This harness allows agents to handle complex tasks, including running code, managing context across long sessions, and coordinating subagents. For example, the API introduces multi-agent support, enabling users to parallelize workloads by delegating tasks to multiple subagents. According to Jack Weissenberger, CTO of Ciridae, this feature cut latency by 4x in their workflows.

OpenAI also emphasized the API’s ability to evolve with new model capabilities. Developers gain immediate access to updates and optimizations as Codex improves. This eliminates the need for reworking agent logic with each model iteration, ensuring that agents remain performant and aligned with state-of-the-art AI tools.

Broader Context: Codex as an Agent Platform

The Agents API builds on OpenAI’s vision for Codex as more than just a code assistant. Codex has grown into a platform for agentic software work, capable of planning, acting, testing, and delivering outputs autonomously. As of June 2026, Codex usage has surged, with heavy users averaging over 60 hours of agent operation per day.

The shift toward autonomous agents aligns with trends in AI adoption across industries. From error detection in software development to multi-step workflows in architecture and finance, businesses increasingly look to AI to streamline repetitive and complex tasks. The Agents API positions OpenAI to capitalize on this demand by lowering the barriers to entry for developers building scalable agents.

Market Implications

While OpenAI has not disclosed financial terms for the Agents API, it operates on a pay-per-use model based on tokens and tool usage. By integrating Codex capabilities into a flexible and accessible API, OpenAI is likely to expand its footprint in enterprise AI solutions. The API’s ability to reduce development time and improve operational efficiency could drive adoption, particularly among companies already leveraging AI for complex decision-making tasks.

For developers, the value proposition is clear: faster deployment, reduced overhead, and access to cutting-edge AI infrastructure. For OpenAI, the move strengthens its position as a leader in AI development platforms, potentially drawing more businesses into its ecosystem.

What’s Next?

The Agents API is available in public beta starting September 10, 2026, with no additional fees beyond usage costs. OpenAI plans to iterate quickly during the beta phase, incorporating developer feedback to refine the product. As AI adoption continues to accelerate, the Agents API could play a pivotal role in shaping how businesses leverage autonomous agents to scale operations.
