GitHub unveils a new Copilot feature, a coding agent that automates tasks using GitHub Actions, enhancing efficiency and security in software development.

GitHub has announced a significant enhancement to its Copilot tool with the introduction of a new coding agent designed to streamline task automation and enhance workflow efficiency. This innovative feature is expected to revolutionize how developers handle routine coding tasks, according to GitHub.

Enhanced Automation with GitHub Actions

The newly introduced feature allows developers to assign tasks or issues directly to Copilot, which can operate in the background using GitHub Actions. It submits its work as a pull request, allowing for seamless integration into existing workflows. This development promises to alleviate the burden of repetitive coding tasks, enabling developers to focus on more complex and creative aspects of their projects.

Security and Configurability

The coding agent is designed with security as a priority. It respects existing branch protection policies, and all pull requests require human approval before any continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows are executed. This ensures that projects remain secure while benefiting from increased automation.

Moreover, the agent is highly configurable, allowing integration with external data and capabilities through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This feature enables the agent to access and utilize data beyond GitHub’s ecosystem, further enhancing its versatility and utility.

Applications and Benefits

Utilizing state-of-the-art models, the Copilot coding agent excels in handling low-to-medium complexity tasks within well-tested codebases. It can add features, fix bugs, extend tests, refactor code, and improve documentation, among other tasks. This allows developers to delegate time-consuming tasks to the agent while they concentrate on high-value coding work.

James Zabinski, DevEx Lead at EY, highlights the agent’s potential, stating, “The Copilot coding agent is opening up doors for human developers to have their own agent-driven team, all working in parallel to amplify their work.”

Getting Started

The coding agent is available to all Copilot Enterprise and Copilot Pro+ customers. To utilize this feature, users must enable the agent in the repositories they wish to use it in. For enterprise users, an administrator will need to activate the policy. The agent mode is also now available in more integrated development environments (IDEs), including Xcode, Eclipse, Jetbrains, and Visual Studio.

Starting June 4, 2025, the Copilot coding agent will require a premium request per model request, a move that aligns with GitHub’s strategy to optimize resource allocation and service delivery.

With this latest update, GitHub continues its mission to enhance developer productivity by automating mundane tasks, allowing developers to maintain their focus on more strategic and innovative work.
