All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • Primavera is targeting the Boca, Guico and Guara oil fields.
  • Ehrsam’s Venezuela strategy also extends to fintech and digital payments.
  • The fields remain under another operator, so no takeover is complete.

Fred Ehrsam made his fortune building crypto infrastructure. Now the Coinbase co-founder is using a separate investment vehicle, Primavera, to pursue control of three Venezuelan oil fields while simultaneously exploring fintech and digital-payment opportunities in the country, according to Bloomberg.

The combination puts crypto-native capital into an unusual new arena: sovereign energy assets being redistributed as Washington rebuilds its economic relationship with Venezuela.

Primavera is the story, not Coinbase

Ehrsam is pursuing the assets through Primavera, an investment firm he co-founded specifically around opportunities in Venezuela.

That distinction makes the move more interesting for crypto investors.

Rather than Coinbase expanding into commodities, this is wealth created during crypto’s first institutional cycle being redeployed into physical infrastructure and sovereign assets.

Ehrsam co-founded Coinbase in 2012 and later Paradigm, putting him at the center of two major phases of crypto capital formation: exchanges and venture investing.

Primavera adds a very different third category.

The firm has explored opportunities spanning oil, gas, fintech and digital payments, and Ehrsam has repeatedly traveled to Caracas while meeting senior Venezuelan and U.S. officials.

Oil therefore appears to be one part of a broader Venezuela investment thesis rather than a standalone commodity trade.

Three oil fields could become Primavera’s entry point

The immediate targets are Boca, Guico and Guara, three fields currently operated by Brazilian driller Alvorada Heavy Industries.

Alvorada, backed by Galapagos Capital, has already invested roughly $30 million to restart inactive wells. Its contracts are now being reviewed by U.S. and Venezuelan authorities, according to Bloomberg.

That review creates Primavera’s opening.

If the existing agreements survive, Ehrsam cannot simply step into the assets. If they are cancelled, Primavera could compete for control as Venezuela reallocates energy projects to new investors.

No transaction has been completed.

The setup nevertheless resembles a form of distressed or special-situations investing: political change is potentially creating access to assets that were previously unavailable.

Crypto capital is moving toward the assets it once tried to replicate

For Web3 investors, the direction of travel is notable.

Crypto spent years creating blockchain representations of real-world assets. Tokenized Treasuries, private credit, commodities and equities are now established parts of the RWA market.

Ehrsam is moving in the opposite direction.

Instead of gaining exposure to a token representing a physical asset, Primavera is attempting to acquire operating rights over the underlying physical infrastructure itself.

There is no evidence that Primavera plans to tokenize Boca, Guico or Guara. But the investment illustrates how the boundary between crypto wealth and traditional assets is becoming less meaningful.

The capital can move even when the asset does not.

Fintech could provide the stronger crypto connection

The more intriguing part of Ehrsam’s Venezuela activity may eventually sit outside the oil fields.

His discussions in Caracas have also covered fintech and digital payments, according to Bloomberg.

Public reporting does not establish that Primavera will build stablecoin rails, tokenize oil production or deploy blockchain settlement infrastructure. Those possibilities should therefore remain separate from what has actually been disclosed.

Still, combining investment in energy with interest in financial infrastructure gives Primavera a wider footprint than a conventional oil acquisition vehicle.

Venezuela is a particularly unusual testing ground for that combination because its economy sits at the intersection of dollar demand, sanctions, commodity exports and alternative payment systems.

If Primavera eventually reveals how its fintech strategy fits alongside its energy investments, that may be more relevant to crypto markets than ownership of three oil fields by itself.

The Coinbase contrast is striking, but limited

There is also an unusual optics gap.

Coinbase restricts Venezuelan access under its sanctions-compliance framework, while the company’s co-founder is independently traveling to Caracas and pursuing investments there.

The two activities should not be conflated.

Ehrsam is no longer running Coinbase, Primavera is separate from the exchange, and private investment conducted under applicable U.S. rules is different from providing restricted financial services.

But the contrast captures how dramatically the investment environment around Venezuela is changing.

A country that remained largely outside regulated U.S. crypto infrastructure is now attracting one of crypto’s wealthiest founders as Washington encourages foreign capital to return to its energy sector.

For Primavera, the first test is concrete: whether authorities cancel Alvorada’s contracts for Boca, Guico and Guara.

Only after that decision will it become clear whether Ehrsam’s Venezuela strategy remains an exploratory investment thesis or produces something crypto founders have rarely owned directly: operating exposure to oil in the ground.
