  • Artist Shl0ms has blown up a $250,000 Lamborghini Huracan to protest the get-rich-quick culture in the crypto space.
  • The artist will be creating 999 NFTs from the shard parts which will go live for auction on February 25.

The craze around blockchain-based non-fungible tokens (NFTs) has spread like a wildfire over the last year. NFTs have been selling for millions of dollars in the market with investors chipping in to make quick money. But can you imagine someone burning a Lamborghini in protest of it?

Artist Shl0ms has recently burnt a $250,000 Lamborghini Huracan in protest of crypto’s get rich quick culture. In a unique style of protest, the artist will be himself converting the shard parts of the Lambo into a collection of 999 NFTs. In a word with crypto news publication The Block, the artist says:

This technology is incredibly promising, there are so many good things we could do with it but there are so many terrible things being done with it. It’s really extractive, zero-sum practices.

The artist further explains why he chose the Lamborghini. “The Lambo is a pretty potent representation of people simply engaging with crypto because it’s a way for them to make money off other people as quickly as possible,” he added.

The publication further adds that artist Shl0ms doesn’t have a traditional crypto background. However, they have been familiar with the crypto space since 2016. Shl0ms further explains the phenomena of skeuomorphism, stating that the digital world has been designed in a way that shows that you drag a physical file across space. to make it appear like the real world. The artist has also played with this idea in their previous artwork.

Blowing up the Lambo for NFTs

Shl0ms said that blowing up an actual Lambo and turning its fragments into NFTs represents the intersection between physical and digital. “The destruction as creation motif is pretty common in the traditional art world. Not as common in the crypto art world,” he added.

Shl0ms first tweeted the idea of blowing up a Lamborghini back in September 2021. He talked about “physically fractionalizing” the luxury car and creating NFTs from the fragments. Ritholtz Wealth Management COO Nick Maggiulli also asked the artists whether it would be “chaotically destroyed or methodically disassembled?”

Later, Shl0ms conducted a poll on Twitter wherein his followers chose “chaos” over “order”. In his Twitter post back then, Shl0ms said:

Also, want to be clear that I hate lambos and that is why I want to destroy one. In fact the DAO will only allow people who hate lambos, that will be our aligning ethos.

To push this idea ahead, Shl0ms got financial backing from a single entity along with using his own funds from his previous art sales. following the blast of Lamborghini Huracan, the team has picked up the pieces and documented them. They have further shot a rotating video of each piece in 4K.

The collection will go live on sale on February 25 wherein the team will also unveil a full video of the explosion. Of the total 999 NFTs, 888 will be available for sale and the rest 111 will be available to the team and initial investors.
