The Brazilian football club, Sao Paulo FC, has announced that it will be accepting payments in cryptocurrencies, which include Shiba Inu (SHIB), for its ticket sales.

Brazil’s Largest Club Now Accepting Crypto

Sao Paulo fans can now purchase tickets to all their club’s games using the Shiba Inu cryptocurrency. The initiative will make Sao Paulo the first-ever football club in Brazil to accept crypto payments. The club has teamed up with its official crypto sponsor and partner, Mexico-based crypto exchange Bitso to open up crypto payments for ticket sales, which had announced support for Shiba Inu on its platform at the start of the year. The news was revealed via a tweet on the Socia Torcedor page. The latter is a membership-based fan page for the club. However, the tweet did not clarify if the opportunity to buy tickets using cryptocurrencies is open exclusively to the members of the Socio Torcedor program.

As per early reports, the payments are being processed by crypto payment service provider, BitPay, which has been supporting SHIB payments since 2021.

Crypto x Football

Crypto has been aggressively infiltrating the sporting space. Football has been one of the sports that has embraced this new technology with arms wide open, with many leading sporting clubs worldwide accepting crypto and blockchain tech in different forms. While some clubs are partnering with crypto companies to launch NFT collections for improved fan engagements, others have started accepting crypto payments for ticket sales, like Sao Paulo FC. Leading exchange, Crypto.com has even signed a partnership deal with FIFA to become the first-ever official crypto sponsor of World Cup 2022. In addition, global crypto exchange Bybit has also signed a deal to sponsor all of Argentina’s national football teams, including the men’s national team.

Football clubs and entities are also exploring the metaverse with just as much enthusiasm. One of the most popular clubs in the world and current Premier League champion, Manchester City, is planning to develop the world’s first football stadium in the Metaverse, which could allow fans from all over the world to watch live games.
