xAI completes its Series C funding round, raising $6 billion with contributions from notable investors like A16Z, Blackrock, and strategic partners NVIDIA and AMD.
xAI, a leading developer of advanced artificial intelligence systems, has successfully closed its Series C funding round, raising a remarkable $6 billion. The announcement, made on December 23, 2024, highlights participation from prominent investors including A16Z, Blackrock, Fidelity Management & Research Company, Kingdom Holdings, Lightspeed, MGX, Morgan Stanley, OIA, QIA, Sequoia Capital, Valor Equity Partners, and Vy Capital. Additionally, strategic partners NVIDIA and AMD have also joined the round, reinforcing their ongoing support for the AI firm, according to x.ai.
Accelerating AI Infrastructure and Development
The funds will be utilized to enhance xAI’s infrastructure and expedite the development of groundbreaking AI products. xAI aims to deploy these technologies for both consumer and enterprise markets, significantly impacting how individuals and businesses operate.
Since its Series B funding announcement in May 2024, xAI has achieved substantial technical advancements. The company has launched several key initiatives, such as the Colossus supercomputer, Grok 2 language model, and the xAI API. Colossus, noted for being the world’s largest AI supercomputer, is powered by 100,000 NVIDIA Hopper GPUs. Remarkably, it became fully operational in just 122 days, setting a new standard in the industry. Plans are underway to double its capacity to 200,000 GPUs using NVIDIA’s Spectrum-X Ethernet networking platform.
Innovative AI Models and Tools
xAI’s development efforts have also yielded Grok 2, a frontier language model known for its advanced reasoning capabilities. Alongside, the xAI API provides developers with programmatic access to xAI’s foundational models, facilitating low-latency, multi-region inference deployments globally. Additionally, the Aurora autoregressive image generation model enhances xAI’s multimodal capabilities, enabling advanced image editing and generation.
The company is also working on Grok 3, anticipated to be its most powerful model to date, which is currently in the training phase. This model is expected to play a crucial role in xAI’s future product offerings.
