Social media platform Twitter has added multiple new payment options for its tip jar options, including Ethereum. Twitter users will now be able to send ETH tips.
Twitter Expands Tip Jar
The inclusion of Ethereum in Twitter’s tip jar feature is a part of the social platform’s initiative to take payment options towards a more globally inclusive stage. Smartphone users of the Twitter app can now add Ethereum addresses to the list of options for would-be tippers. The platform now will also support international payment services providers like Paga, Paytm, and Barter by Flutterwave. Additionally, users from Nigeria, India, and Ghana can now take advantage of the tipping feature and use it to send funds. Even though BTC tips were already enabled on the platform via the Lightning network, the recent addition of Ethereum addresses lends weight to the argument that Twitter is eager to explore non-BTC crypto features, like the infamous hexagonal NFT profile pictures.
A spokesperson from Twitter talked about the addition of the new payment options on the platform, saying,
“Like Twitter, digital currencies operate without global barriers. We’re excited to incorporate Ethereum in addition to Bitcoin payment in Tips, enabling more people to participate in the digital economy with as little friction as possible.”
Limitations Involved
However, the integration does not support ENS addresses. Therefore, to send an ETH tip, the sender has to click on the receiver’s ETH tip option, which will copy their long, alphanumeric Eth address. The sender can then navigate to their own crypto wallet and paste the address to send the ETH tip. Another challenge for the feature is that since tips are usually of smaller value, it would not make sense for users to tip to an Ethereum address, considering the transaction fees. Therefore the feature is just another way of sharing one’s Ethereum wallet address with the followers.
Verify That NFT Profile Pic
Lately, Twitter has been on a crypto roll. Last month, the social media platform launched a new feature that would allow certain members to verify NFTs as their profile pictures. The feature was available only to members of the Twitter Blue subscription service and only for iOS users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, the team has revealed that they plan on bringing the feature to Android or Web users of Twitter Blue. The feature would add a level of authenticity to NFT ownerships and differentiate between the true owners of an NFT and those who have merely copied the image from someone else’s profile.
