The Payment Network Layer 2 of The Open Network (TON), scaling for the future, has been revealed as part of its roadmap for the first half of 2025. The roadmap highlights nine significant updates to enhance its blockchain. Among the most anticipated is the Payment Network Layer 2, which aims to improve scalability, reduce costs, and increase transaction speed.
Following a previous CNF update on Telegram’s TON Coin adoption, the introduction of TON payments for ads has already boosted network activity, reflecting growing utility within the ecosystem. Now positioned to rival Ethereum, this innovation is tailored for high-frequency transactions, including on-chain trading and instant gaming responses.
In details the TON roadmaps explained in the TON Core: Roadmap 2025 H1 released in the last few days, include the mention of:
“One such solution is Payment Network, a Layer 2 system based on payment channels and described in the original TON whitepaper. Payment Network allows for: Instant transfers with micro-commissions between users; and Simple asset swaps;’”
Specifically, as shared in a tweet by TON, the roadmap underscores TON’s commitment to supporting 500 million active users, with the Payment Network Layer 2 being the fifth update in the pipeline. This layer will enable instant transfers with micro-commissions while simplifying asset swaps.

In addition to the Payment Network Layer 2, TON has ambitious plans to accelerate mainnet upgrades, introduce advanced validator tools, and develop a cross-chain solution called TON BTC Teleport. This feature will facilitate seamless asset transfers between Bitcoin and TON, marking a significant step toward interoperability.
