Sui Blockchain shifts focus from TPS to CPS, offering a deeper insight into network activity by measuring discrete operations, thanks to Programmable Transaction Blocks.

The Sui Blockchain is redefining how throughput is measured by introducing Commands Per Second (CPS) as a more precise metric than the traditionally used Transactions Per Second (TPS), according to the Sui Foundation. This shift highlights the true scale of on-chain work, especially as Sui handles increasingly complex transactions.

Understanding CPS vs. TPS

While TPS has long been the standard for gauging blockchain performance, it only scratches the surface of what Sui is capable of. CPS, on the other hand, measures the number of discrete operations processed per second, offering a more accurate reflection of network activity. This is particularly important on Sui, where a single transaction can encompass numerous operations thanks to Programmable Transaction Blocks (PTBs).

PTBs allow transactions on Sui to bundle up to 1,024 separate operations, which would otherwise require multiple transactions on other blockchains. This capability not only enhances efficiency but also calls for a metric like CPS to capture the actual work being executed.

The Role of Programmable Transaction Blocks

PTBs are a significant innovation within Sui, enabling developers to consolidate various operations into a single atomic transaction. This not only simplifies application logic but also reduces latency by processing multiple steps simultaneously. Users benefit from fewer transactions to sign and more predictable gas costs, while developers can encode entire workflows into one unit.

By measuring CPS, Sui offers a more comprehensive view of its capabilities, as it reflects the true computation happening on-chain, unlike TPS which merely counts transaction frequency.

Comparing Blockchain Throughput

Traditional TPS charts often misrepresent blockchain performance by not accounting for transaction complexity. A blockchain requiring multiple transactions to complete a task that Sui can achieve in a single PTB may show a higher TPS, but the actual work done is similar. CPS levels the playing field by considering the number of operations, thus providing a fairer comparison.

Why CPS Matters

For developers, analysts, and anyone interested in blockchain performance, understanding CPS is crucial. On Sui, where transactions are rich and complex due to PTBs, CPS offers a more meaningful perspective on network activity. As blockchain ecosystems evolve, metrics like CPS will be essential to understanding the depth of operations beyond mere speed.

In summary, while TPS remains a useful metric, CPS provides a clearer picture of the actual workload handled by Sui, reflecting the sophistication of its transactions and the network’s true capabilities.
