All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • BTC and ETH trading is available through Standard Chartered DIFC.
  • Orders can use infrastructure already familiar to institutional FX desks.
  • Clients can settle with Standard Chartered or another supported custodian.

Standard Chartered has launched deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading for institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates, becoming the first Global Systemically Important Bank (G-SIB) to offer the service in the country.

According to Reuters, eligible clients can now trade BTC/USD and ETH/USD through the bank’s established electronic trading infrastructure while retaining flexibility over where the assets are ultimately custodied.

Crypto joins Standard Chartered’s FX infrastructure

The UAE service integrates Bitcoin and Ethereum into Standard Chartered’s institutional electronic trading channels rather than creating a separate crypto venue.

Clients can access BTC/USD and ETH/USD through the bank’s digital-asset trading platform, which supports Standard Chartered Markets and FIX API connectivity. The bank’s wider FX operation covers more than 130 currencies across 53 markets.

For trading desks, the operational change is straightforward: crypto execution can sit closer to infrastructure already used for traditional markets.

The service provides deliverable spot BTC and ETH, with settlement allowing clients to determine where the assets are held.

Institutions keep control of the custody decision

Standard Chartered does not require clients executing crypto trades through the bank to use its custody service.

Institutions can settle with another supported custodian or use Standard Chartered’s regulated digital-asset custody operation in the Dubai International Financial Centre.

That gives clients four practical components:

  • Execution: BTC/USD and ETH/USD through Standard Chartered.
  • Connectivity: Existing electronic channels and FIX API infrastructure.
  • Settlement: Delivery of the underlying digital asset.
  • Custody: Standard Chartered or another supported provider.

The structure lets an institution maintain separate execution and custody relationships, a familiar model in traditional markets that remains less common across crypto-native venues.

Dubai now hosts more of the bank’s crypto stack

Standard Chartered launched its DIFC digital-asset custody service in September 2024 after receiving regulatory approval from the Dubai Financial Services Authority. Brevan Howard Digital was the first client.

The bank expanded that infrastructure in 2025 through an arrangement with OKX that allowed institutions to keep eligible assets with Standard Chartered while using their value as collateral for exchange trading. Brevan

Howard and Franklin Templeton participated in the initiative.

Spot execution now adds another function to the same regional footprint.

Standard Chartered has also been expanding the surrounding infrastructure. It partnered with institutional liquidity provider B2C2 in February 2026 and later agreed to acquire Zodia Custody, subject to regulatory approvals.

The result is an increasingly connected institutional offering covering execution, custody, liquidity and collateral management.

UAE follows the bank’s UK Bitcoin and Ether launch

Standard Chartered introduced institutional deliverable BTC and ETH spot trading through its UK branch in July 2025, becoming the first G-SIB to provide that capability.

The UAE rollout extends the model into a market where the bank already has regulated digital-asset custody.

That combination matters more than geographic expansion alone. A client operating from the DIFC can access crypto execution through a global bank while remaining inside an established regulatory and institutional framework.

It also raises the competitive benchmark for other international banks active in Middle Eastern financial centers.

Banks have spent years offering institutional clients indirect crypto exposure, custody pilots, tokenization projects and blockchain-based settlement experiments. Standard Chartered is now combining several of those functions with direct spot execution.

The question for competitors is no longer whether regulated institutional crypto infrastructure can operate alongside conventional banking. It is whether their clients begin expecting those capabilities from the same institutions already handling their currencies, securities and cash.

The next expansion may come from derivatives

Bitcoin and Ethereum remain the only assets included in the UAE spot launch.

Standard Chartered has also identified non-deliverable forwards as part of the planned expansion of its digital-asset trading platform.

That will be a more useful indicator of the bank’s ambitions than adding a long list of smaller tokens.

A broader institutional derivatives suite would allow clients to hedge crypto exposures and manage risk through the same banking relationship used for spot execution.

For now, the UAE launch establishes the underlying infrastructure: regulated bank execution for BTC and ETH, flexible custody and connectivity built around systems institutional desks already use.

The next test is how much institutional flow moves through it.
