  • According to the IOTA Foundation, the second quarter of 2025 was one of its most impactful periods yet, marked by significant progress and major milestones.
  • Standout achievements were the launch of the Rebased Mainnet in May and the global rollout of the TWIN Foundation.

IOTA just published its Q2 report, highlighting what’s been a turning point for the project. Over the past few months, the focus has been on transforming the IOTA network into a truly high-performance Layer 1 blockchain. The team also worked hard to build momentum around the newly launched IOTA Rebased Mainnet through strategic events, new integrations, and targeted campaigns.

The Legal & Regulatory Affairs team remained active on the global stage, continuing to engage with policymakers and responding to multiple regulatory consultations worldwide.

Highlights for Q2

“The primary focus this quarter was the successful launch of the IOTA Rebased Mainnet. This launch represents the culmination of more than a year of collaborative work across all R&D teams to transform IOTA into a high-performance blockchain on par with other major Layer 1 networks,” the team stated in its report.

Launched in May 2025, the Rebased Mainnet is the result of intensive cross-team collaboration aimed at completely reengineering the IOTA protocol. The upgrade transforms IOTA from a data-centric ledger into a high-performance smart contract platform that now supports a broad range of decentralized applications.

As CNF mentioned in an article, Rebased introduced several critical enhancements like an Object-Based Ledger that supports advanced account models and token management. There was also an update to Developer Tools.  IOTA released refreshed SDKs, wallets, and dashboards, making it easier for developers to build and deploy dApps on the new mainnet.

The genesis of the new mainnet was secured by a set of 13 trusted validators who participated in the Genesis Ceremony, a critical step in bootstrapping the network’s trust and decentralization. These include: IOTA Foundation, IOTA DLT Ecosystem Foundation, Tangle Ecosystem Foundation, DLT GREEN, P2P.org, LugaNodes, and Twinstake.

In Lusaka on May 8, IOTA, together with TradeMark Africa, the World Economic Forum, and the Tony Blair Institute, officially launched the TWIN Foundation. An initiative that will transform global trade through blockchain-powered infrastructure.

The system has already slashed trade document processing times between Kenya and the UK from weeks to just minutes. Since then, TWIN has gained visibility on global stages, appearing at events like the UAE’s TradeTech Forum.

Later that month, on May 30th, IOTA co-hosted the East Africa Web3 Innovation Summit in Nairobi with TradeMark Africa, a key moment for the project this quarter. The summit brought together developers, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore how IOTA’s technology could drive real-world change in the region.

Attendees participated in hands-on workshops with IOTA Move, explored the TWIN framework, and joined a panel discussion featuring Kenyan trade experts who unpacked how TLIP is already reshaping the country’s trade landscape.

Also highlighted in the report is IOTA Identity, which just rolled out its version 1.6 beta, now fully compatible with the IOTA Mainnet. It empowers users to manage their own digital identities without relying on third parties.

As we’ve previously reported, to make things easier for new users and developers, IOTA launched dedicated product pages for both IOTA Identity and the IOTA Gas Station on their official website, helping streamline onboarding and access to these tools.

“These developments reflect steady progress in bringing IOTA’s infrastructure into real-world use. With partner applications beginning to launch and key tools maturing, the focus remains on supporting builders and iterating based on practical integration needs, “the team stated.
