The HKMA alerts the public about a fraudulent website mimicking China Construction Bank (Asia), urging vigilance against scams and phishing attempts.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a public warning regarding a fraudulent website and internet banking login screen masquerading as China Construction Bank (Asia) Corporation Limited. This announcement, made on December 9, 2024, aims to prevent the public from falling victim to potential scams associated with this fake platform.

Details of the Fraudulent Activity

The HKMA has received reports concerning the counterfeit website and login screen, which are designed to deceive users into providing sensitive personal information. The authority emphasizes that legitimate banks will not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing customers to the banks’ websites for transactions. Furthermore, banks will not request personal information, such as login credentials or One-Time Passwords, via phone, email, or SMS.

Safety Measures and Recommendations

The HKMA advises individuals who may have interacted with the fraudulent site or provided personal information to immediately contact China Construction Bank (Asia) using the contact details provided in the official press release. Additionally, they should report the incident to the Hong Kong Police Force’s Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.

Broader Implications of Banking Frauds

This alert comes amid increasing concerns over digital banking security and phishing scams targeting financial institutions globally. As more transactions move online, the sophistication of fraudulent schemes has also evolved, necessitating heightened awareness and proactive measures from both banks and consumers.
