Hargreaves Lansdown Lists 9 Crypto ETNs From Blackrock, Bitwise
One of the world’s largest digital wealth management brokerage platforms, Hargreaves Lansdown, is giving eligible U.K. customers access to bitcoin and ether exchange-traded notes (ETNs), marking a notable shift for a platform that previously questioned whether bitcoin should be treated as an asset class.
The firm has listed nine crypto ETNs from issuers including Blackrock’s iShares, Wisdomtree, 21Shares, Invesco, Coinshares and Bitwise, according to the Financial Times. Annual fees range from zero to 0.35%.
The products are available through Hargreaves’ Advanced Investing service. Customers must meet eligibility requirements, pass an appropriateness assessment and wait through a 24-hour cooling-off period before trading.
That structure reflects the caution still surrounding retail crypto access in the United Kingdom.
Bitcoin Access Expands but With Guardrails
The launch follows the Financial Conduct Authority’s decision in October 2025 to restore retail access to crypto ETNs.
Hargreaves did not immediately follow rivals into the market. At the time, the platform didn’t consider bitcoin as an asset class, underscoring its more conservative stance. Its approach has since softened, but not disappeared.
Chief Product Officer Doug Abbott said the firm wanted customers to understand the risks before investing. He also said the company had continued receiving questions about crypto ETNs, particularly from more experienced investors.
For those customers, the appeal is straightforward. ETNs provide exposure to the bitcoin price or ether without requiring investors to hold crypto directly, manage private keys or use a digital asset exchange.
UK Crypto ETN Trading Is Growing
The development matters because Hargreaves is a major gateway to U.K. retail capital.
Trading in London-listed crypto ETNs has increased since the FCA reopened access. 21Shares estimated that the products generated roughly $1.5 billion in trading volume after the rule change, about 9 times the level seen over the previous 17 months.
Even so, London remains well behind Europe’s largest venues. August trading volumes were reportedly about one-sixth of those on Germany’s Xetra exchange.
The timing is notable as well. Bitcoin’s price traded near $125,000 when the FCA changed its rules in October 2025, later fell toward $58,000 in June, and has recovered to around $80,000 as Hargreaves enters the market.
For U.K. investors, the significance is less about another crypto product and more about distribution. Bitcoin exposure is moving deeper into mainstream investment platforms, even as those platforms keep tighter controls around who can buy it.
