Telecom companies across five continents are developing sovereign AI infrastructure using NVIDIA technology, aiming to boost national AI capabilities and economic growth.

Telecommunications companies worldwide are increasingly turning to NVIDIA technology to build sovereign AI infrastructure, reshaping national capabilities in artificial intelligence. This trend is evident across five continents, with telcos investing heavily in AI factories to support local economies and drive innovation.

The Rise of AI Factories

AI factories represent a shift from traditional cloud-computing architecture to accelerated computing, optimized for AI workloads. These facilities, powered by high-performance GPUs, democratize AI by making large language models (LLMs) and AI tools accessible to a wide range of industries, from healthcare to automotive.

According to recent McKinsey research, the global GPU-as-a-service market, which telcos can tap into, is projected to be worth $35 billion to $70 billion annually by 2030. This underscores the significant opportunity for telcos in the AI infrastructure space.

Telcos as Sovereign AI Providers

Telecom companies are uniquely positioned to provide sovereign AI infrastructure due to their existing data centers, fiber connectivity, and expertise in managing complex systems. These advantages allow them to establish AI factories quickly and cost-effectively, leveraging their national digital infrastructure.

Currently, 18 telecom operators have launched NVIDIA-powered AI factories, with more expected to follow suit. This movement is creating a new growth avenue for the telecom industry, traditionally focused on connectivity.

Global Examples of AI Infrastructure

Examples of telco-led AI factories include Japan’s SoftBank and KDDI, Indonesia’s Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and Singapore’s Singtel, among others. These initiatives aim to develop local AI capabilities and support national strategies by providing AI services to enterprises, government agencies, and academia.

In North America, TELUS is spearheading Canada’s sovereign AI initiative, while Cassava Technologies is leading efforts in Africa. Meanwhile, Kazakhtelecom is driving AI development in Central Asia, highlighting the widespread adoption of AI infrastructure across diverse regions.

The Future of Telco-Powered AI

As AI factories continue to expand, telecom companies are also exploring the potential of AI-RAN (Radio Access Network) to integrate AI with 5G networks. This convergence could significantly enhance wireless network performance and efficiency, positioning telcos as crucial players in the AI revolution.

NVIDIA’s Cloud Partner program provides a comprehensive reference architecture, enabling telcos to establish themselves as AI cloud providers. This includes access to a full-stack technology platform, a large partner ecosystem, and educational resources to upskill domestic AI talent.

The growing demand for AI infrastructure is set to transform telecom companies into key providers of connectivity and AI services, fostering inclusive AI economies and driving the next industrial revolution.
