Twitter Blue users on iOS can now flex their NFTs with verifiable NFT Profile Pictures. This feature will be available for Android and Web users soon. The offering is currently live in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
A Move Long Time Coming
Twitter has hinted at this move for the longest time. Already several influences in the “Crypto Twitter” space have set their profile picture to an NFT. As a Twitter spokesperson told TechCrunch:
“Twitter is where people go to talk about things they care about, and often where people have their first experience with crypto and NFTs. We’re now seeing people use NFTs as a form of identity and self-expression, and as a way to join the thriving community and increasingly active conversation on Twitter.”
However, this allowed many folks to simply right-click and save the NFT photo to get unearned social capital or impersonate a well-known influencer by simply rehashing their NFT pic. With this new feature, Twitter allows its users to verifiably prove that they actually own a BAYC or a CryptoPunk. Twitter told ZDNet:
“As many people’s first interaction with crypto happens on Twitter, we want to make it easier for them to interact with the community, participate in the thriving NFT conversation, and take a leap into the world of digital assets directly on Twitter — enter NFT Profile Pictures. Authenticity around NFT ownership is important to the crypto community and with NFT Profile Pictures, we’re providing a way for people to prove ownership of their NFTs and support those making this art.”
How Do You Use This Feature?
Users will need to change their profile picture as they normally would. During the change, they will have the option to select an NFT. This requires the user to connect their supported crypto wallet to their Twitter Blue account. The currently supported wallets are Argent, Coinbase Wallet, Ledger Live, MetaMask, Rainbow, and Trust Wallet. Upon clicking the profile picture, other Twitter users will be able to see information about the artist, the collection, transaction history, and whether the NFT is verified by a third-party marketplace like OpenSea or not. As per Twitter, only ERC-721 and ERC-1155 tokens will be supported for now.
