DRW’s Cumberland Is Buying Robinhood Chain’s Meme Star PONS

Who Is Actually Buying

A wallet linked to Cumberland, the crypto trading arm of Chicago firm DRW and one of the oldest market makers in the industry, has bought another 2.7 million PONS for about $1.55 million, lifting the position to 11.2 million PONS worth $6.76 million.

The accumulation has been methodical rather than opportunistic, i.e., daily purchases across a full week, with about 8.5 million tokens worth $6.55 million withdrawn from crypto exchange Gate over that stretch.

Cumberland is not alone, with rival market maker Wintermute also making large PONS purchases of its own. In fact, blockchain analytics firm Arkham has suggested Wintermute may be handling market making for the token.

What Pons Actually Does

Pons is a token launchpad that lets anyone mint a tradable token in minutes for about a dollar in fees. It runs on Robinhood Chain, the Ethereum L2 network built on Arbitrum, and has since become the hub for the meme world’s most violent price swings.

To this point, on Sept. 2, nearly 25,000 tokens launched on Pons, resulting in its daily trading volume hitting $544 million, and its generated protocol fees surging to $5.95 in just 24 hours. As a result, it ranked fourth among all protocols, behind only Tether, Uniswap and Circle, and ahead of Pump, Hyperliquid, and Robinhood Chain itself.

Moreover, it bears mentioning that since July, roughly 646,000 tokens have been created on Pons by more than 167,000 unique addresses (accurate as of Sept. 3).

The PONS token collects those fees in WETH and uses them to repurchase and burn supply. About 293 million PONS, some 29% of the original supply, have already been destroyed through that mechanism.

The Risk Nobody Should Skip

As things stand, PONS is trading near $0.58 with a market capitalization of about $440 million. It is also down 7.5% on the day and roughly 35% below the record $0.971 it set late last week.

The 30-day number, however, is the one that stands to explain all the attention the meme token is getting, i.e. a monthly profit of 1,384%. Assets moving at that pace witness repricing movements fairly quickly. In fact, the launchpad category as a whole is built on activity that can evaporate as quickly as it appeared.

Pons’ revenue, in this regard, is a direct function of how many people are minting memecoins per week. In fact, a single wallet recently turned about $220,000 into more than $4.7 million by catching CASHCAT and PONS in the same run, which is the kind of outcome that typically draws crowds and precedes air pockets.

The next major signal to look out for is whether the daily buying continues once broader risk appetite cools, especially given that the crypto sector absorbed $562 million in liquidations yesterday. Speculative small caps tend to feel the heat of such events before bitcoin ever does.
