Doudna: The Supercomputer Set to Revolutionize Scientific Discoveries

A new era of scientific discovery is on the horizon with the introduction of Doudna, a state-of-the-art supercomputer being constructed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Named after Nobel laureate and CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, this next-generation system represents a significant investment in advancing the United States’ position in high-performance computing and AI-driven research, according to NVIDIA.

Unveiling the Doudna System

Set to launch in 2026, the Doudna supercomputer, also known as NERSC-10, is engineered to bolster the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) scientific missions. Its design focuses on integrating simulation, data, and artificial intelligence into a unified platform, allowing researchers to conduct real-time discoveries and address global challenges more effectively.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright emphasized the system’s role in maintaining American scientific leadership, stating, “The Doudna system represents DOE’s commitment to advancing American leadership in science, AI, and high-performance computing.”

Powered by Dell infrastructure and NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin architecture, Doudna is poised to outperform its predecessor, Perlmutter, by more than tenfold while using significantly less power. This leap in efficiency is attributed to advancements in chip design and system-level optimizations.

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, described the system as a “time machine for science,” capable of compressing years of research into days. This capability will empower over 11,000 researchers to make strides in various fields such as fusion energy, materials science, drug discovery, and astronomy.

AI-Driven Breakthroughs

Doudna will enable AI-driven innovations across multiple scientific domains. For instance, it will support AI applications in protein design, fundamental physics, and materials science. The system will also facilitate real-time data processing from instruments like the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument at Kitt Peak, helping scientists map the universe.

Doudna’s integration with DOE’s ESnet ensures seamless data streaming from telescopes, detectors, and genome sequencers, enhancing the responsiveness of scientific workflows.
