Cronos (CRO) EVM introduces significant optimizations, reducing block generation times by up to tenfold, enhancing real-time DeFi, gaming, and payment services.
Cronos (CRO) EVM is set to revolutionize blockchain technology by significantly reducing block generation times, according to a recent announcement by Cronos. The blockchain platform aims to optimize its ecosystem to support high-frequency services such as real-time DeFi, gaming, and payments by cutting block creation time by up to tenfold.
Enhancing Transaction Speed
The latest upgrades incorporate the use of BlockSTM, a parallel transaction processing technology, designed to enhance transaction speed and user experience. This innovation allows projects operating on Cronos to provide users with faster and smoother interactions, making Cronos a high-performance, low-latency EVM chain with high compatibility and throughput.
Sub-Second Block Time Goal
Currently, the Cronos EVM operates with a block time of 5.6 seconds. However, the team aims to reduce this to below one second, transforming the EVM into a high-speed, high-performance, low-latency blockchain. The optimization is based on recent scalability improvements, including BlockSTM, which enables simultaneous transaction processing.
Impact and Benefits
The expected benefits of this optimization include increased transaction throughput (TPS), sub-second responsiveness for dApps and end-users, and improved support for real-time use cases such as DeFi, gaming, and payments.
Deployment Timeline
Following successful internal testing, the reduced block time is set to be tested on the testnet in the week of June 16, with developers encouraged to start testing as soon as the update is applied. If the testnet trials are successful, the mainnet launch is tentatively scheduled for the first week of July 2025.
Developers and infrastructure providers are advised to test application performance on the Cronos testnet following the update. Feedback from dApp developers, validators, and ecosystem partners is actively being sought to ensure a smooth transition.
