- Solana blockchain has undergone a game-changing upgrade that will see it support user privacy through “confidential transfers.”
- This upgrade sees the blockchain expand into a new market and compete with privacy-focused blockchains such as Monero and ZCash.
According to a recent update from the development team, Solana has undergone a massive upgrade. Solana’s v1.16 update introduces “Confidential Transfers,” which enhances user privacy with encrypted SPL token transactions. In essence, this will allow blockchain users to complete transactions without revealing details about the transactions, these details include the amount being transacted, and possibly the sender, and receiver.
The update was shared by Helius Labs CEO CEO Mert Mumtaz who noted that the upgrade was a big improvement that was not receiving the expected attention. It comes after a super-majority of validator adoption following ten months of development. The v1.16 release has been running on testnet since June.
Solana’s new 1.16 update includes:
– confidential transfers
– better zk support
– reduced hardware requirementsthese are big improvements — I don’t think enough people are aware
(we need to get much better at communicating)

Halborn Director of Enterprise Security Piotr Cielas has discussed further improvements introduced to Solana through the successful upgrade, he told The Block;
Version 1.16 of the Solana Rust client introduces multiple performance optimizations and stability improvements, and addresses implementation inconsistencies identified in versions 1.14 and lower,
The most significant update however brings enhanced Zero-Knowledged Proof capabilities to the blockchain. Now, Solana natively supports a highly efficient elliptic curve (BN-128) which significantly decreases proof generation and verification costs, and can be interoperable with Ethereum smart contracts.
While some have viewed the update as one that sees the network emphasizing privacy, it utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to encrypt the balances and transaction amounts of Solana Program Library (SPL) tokens, focusing on confidentiality rather than privacy.
The upgrade further has improved validation by significantly reducing RAM usage hardware requirements for validators. Furthermore, the upgrade introduces a refined gossip pull-requests peer sampling system, improving bandwidth constraint issues.
Is Solana Competing with Privacy Coins?
Sharing the same capabilities as privacy-focused cryptocurrencies such as Dash, Monero, and ZCash comes with great benefits as these coins have witnessed their adoption skyrocket in the wake of CBDCs. Privacy-focused coins offer financial freedom which is greatly undermined by government-issued CBDCs.

However, privacy-focused coins have long been targeted by governments all over the world and regarded as easy tools for criminality, in some countries including Dubai, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. In other countries, crypto exchanges are pressured not to issue these coins. With the upgrade, Solana might be subjected to similar restrictions and extra scrutiny.
Despite the recent update, Solana’s native token SOL is still facing a bearish outlook. The altcoin has lost nearly 5 percent in the last 24 hours to trade at $22 at the time of press. Like all great projects, the community, users, and developers are focused on development and adoption with the understanding that macro factors are dictating prices. With this, it is clear that in the next bull run, Solana will have a fairly good chance of being one of the top performers.
