The University of Tokyo (also called the Todai) plans to offer various courses in the metaverse before this year. On Saturday, a report from a local media outlet, the Asahi Shimbun, states that the courses available will suit anyone regardless of their age or current educational status.
The report also said that the University of Tokyo would deliver these metaverse courses through its engineering-related graduates and faculty of engineering schools. Ideally, the University delivers such courses through its dedicated faculty for the relevant degrees.
Students will receive certificates on completion of the study. The University of Tokyo said it is launching this new range of courses because there have been inadequately skilled workers in the country’s digital transformation and advanced technology sector.
According to the University officials, the benefit of offering these courses in the metaverse is that anyone, no matter their social reputation, age, where they reside, or gender, can improve their knowledge about information science and engineering.
While it is likely that some blockchain-based courses will include NFTs, they weren’t specifically mentioned as one of the courses on offer. Many would be interested in learning more about NFTs since it is often discussed alongside the metaverse. Also, the number of famous metaverse brands keeps growing daily.
Junior-high and high school students will receive introductory training about the metaverse. However, they will also learn more about possible ways to get jobs in related fields, including engineering and science. The University of Tokyo also said it would deliver the training via online and face-to-face interactions.
University students and those already working will have the chance to reskill and upskill through relevant online courses. Such courses include entrepreneurship, Next-Gen communication tech, and artificial intelligence. The University also hopes to encourage more women to enroll in these courses. According to the school, the number of females in engineering is significantly less than males.
Japan’s metaverse space
Residents continue to find more use cases for the metaverse technology. Hence, several metaverse-related applications have been launched in Japan in the last couple of months. On Monday, another popular news outlet, Japan Today, reported that the JACFA is launching a virtual support space in the SecondLife metaverse platform.
The JACFA is a support group from Japan’s sixth largest city, Fukuoka. They aim to reintegrate the Hikkikomoris into society. The Hikikomori are people who aren’t interested in leaving their homes. Many residents consider this issue a huge social problem in the country.
Hence, the JACFA is approaching it with caution. Its first step is to help this person without pressurizing them to make physical interactions. Earlier in the year, the 2022 commencement ceremony of the NSG college league took place in the metaverse. A total of 3,800 students in 29 trade schools participated in the ceremony. The event took place virtually to prevent attendees from contracting COVID-19.
