Strategy’s Bitcoin Guide Makes the Case for a Global Reserve Asset

Key Takeaways

  • Strategy argues bitcoin could anchor a broader digital capital market.
  • Direct BTC, funds, and corporate securities carry different risks.
  • Scarcity supports the thesis, while demand and adoption shape value.

Strategy Positions Bitcoin as Global Reserve Capital

Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy Inc. (Nasdaq: MSTR), promoted the company’s bitcoin investor guide on X on Sept. 12, emphasizing BTC’s potential role as a global reserve asset. The thesis positions bitcoin as an asset that could attract wealth now held in traditional markets.

The company’s 21-page bitcoin investment framework, revised Sept. 7, examines how a supply capped at 21 million coins, independent verification, and global transferability could support long-term demand. Strategy describes a potential market in which equity, credit, debt, derivatives, and money develop around BTC.

Saylor stated:

“Bitcoin is an open, global reserve asset with absolute scarcity. The Investor Guide explores bitcoin’s monetary properties, investment case, market structure, portfolio role, custody and risks.”

That argument extends Saylor’s earlier expectation that bitcoin could become more widely held by companies, banks, funds, and sovereigns. His global digital capital outlook anticipated deeper financial integration by 2036. Strategy’s latest framework similarly envisages bitcoin competing for wealth-preservation demand while dollars, banks, and traditional capital markets retain their roles.

Bitcoin Exposure Takes Different Forms

Financial products built around bitcoin can offer different combinations of income, price exposure, and corporate risk to investors. Saylor previously presented his digital credit thesis at Goldman Sachs. Strategy’s framework distinguishes direct BTC ownership from common shares, preferred securities, debt, and derivatives, each carrying separate claims and obligations.

Investors can choose among several forms of bitcoin exposure, with ownership, income, custody, and risk varying by structure. Strategy’s framework includes bitcoin treasury equity, preferred securities, derivatives, and spot bitcoin exchange-traded products (ETPs) as another way to gain bitcoin exposure, with each route carrying distinct legal and economic outcomes. Investors purchase ETP shares through brokerage accounts, while custodians hold the underlying coins. Strategy identifies fees, tracking differences, corporate risks, capital structure, and legal structure among the risks associated with different routes.

Legal treatment also depends on the asset and transaction involved, a distinction relevant to the surrounding financial products. The Securities and Exchange Commission’s March 17 crypto asset interpretation addresses how a nonsecurity crypto asset can become subject to an investment contract. Strategy separately identifies its digital capital terminology as conceptual labels rather than statutory classifications.

Scarcity Leaves Demand and Custody Risks Intact

Bitcoin’s fixed issuance schedule supports Strategy’s monetary argument, but market demand still determines what investors will pay for the asset. The company’s bitcoin market metrics track ETF holdings, trading activity, volatility, and other indicators. The publication uses dated market snapshots and explicitly recognizes that bitcoin’s price can decline materially.

Ownership choices add further risk, as self-custody puts responsibility for private keys, backups, and recovery on the holder. Delegating custody instead creates dependence on a provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal policies. Strategy also cautions that leverage, fees, corporate risks, or forced liquidation can produce losses even when bitcoin’s price ultimately rises.

The company has a direct economic stake in the adoption thesis through its holdings and bitcoin-linked securities. On Sept. 8, Strategy disclosed holdings of 845,050 bitcoin as of Sept. 7.
