Ethereum Foundation sets December 2029 as the quantum-resistant target for Ethereum L1, with Hegotá fork as a critical milestone.

The Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol cluster has outlined its strategic priorities through 2029, with quantum resistance for Ethereum’s Layer 1 (L1) blockchain as its primary objective. According to an official blog post published on September 7, achieving post-quantum security across execution, consensus, and data layers by December 2029 is now the cluster’s “north star.”

This commitment aligns Ethereum with migration targets set by tech giants like Google, Cloudflare, and Microsoft, all of which have flagged the mid-2030s as a critical window for post-quantum cryptography adoption in preparation for “Q-day”—the point when quantum computers could break conventional cryptography.

Hegotá Fork: The First Step

The upcoming Hegotá fork, expected to commence implementation in late Q4 2026, will be the first major milestone on Ethereum’s path to quantum preparedness. It will introduce foundational upgrades, such as EIP-7805’s fork-choice enforced inclusion lists (FOCIL) for censorship resistance and EIP-8141’s new transaction model, “Frames.” These changes aim to harden Ethereum against censorship and cryptographic vulnerabilities while setting the stage for post-quantum enhancements in subsequent forks.

Hegotá will also incorporate privacy-focused updates like EIP-8250 (Keyed Nonces) and EIP-8272 (Recent Roots), which aim to provide native support for private transactions on Ethereum L1. These upgrades are designed to improve user privacy without relying on third parties, a significant step toward Ethereum’s vision of decentralized, censorship-resistant finance.

Post-Quantum Readiness: Aggressive Cadence

To meet its December 2029 deadline, the EF Protocol cluster plans to execute five hard forks after Hegotá, with an average cadence of 7.2 months per fork. Key milestones include the introduction of leanSPHINCS cryptographic schemes, post-quantum attestations, and a decentralized public-key registry by J*, a contingency fork milestone set for no later than December 2029. A “minimum viable post-quantum” (MV-PQ) state would temporarily safeguard Ethereum through Q-day while full quantum resistance is finalized.

This roadmap is notably aggressive, requiring overlapping development cycles and ecosystem-wide collaboration. The Ethereum Foundation emphasized that cryptographers, client developers, researchers, and the broader community will need to coordinate tightly to meet these deadlines.

Implications for Ethereum

For Ethereum’s price and ecosystem, this long-term commitment signals its intent to remain a secure and sustainable platform amid evolving cryptographic threats. At $2,472.41 as of September 7, ETH’s current price doesn’t yet reflect any immediate reaction to the announcement, with a modest 24-hour decline of 0.34%. However, traders and long-term holders should monitor progress on the Hegotá fork and its implications for Ethereum’s scalability, privacy, and resilience.

The Ethereum Foundation’s focus on quantum readiness also reinforces the network’s positioning as a leader in blockchain innovation. By planning for Q-day as early as 2030, Ethereum aims to future-proof its infrastructure against existential risks, a move that could bolster institutional confidence in its long-term viability.

Looking Ahead

The Ethereum Foundation will host a Reddit AMA on September 16 at 2 PM UTC to address questions about these priorities, including the Hegotá fork and its associated EIPs. The AMA offers a chance for community members and stakeholders to gain deeper insights into the roadmap and its implications.

With the Hegotá fork serving as a critical litmus test for Ethereum’s post-quantum ambitions, successful implementation will be a key factor in maintaining the network’s dominance as a blockchain platform in the years to come.
