5-Hour Outage Shakes Blockchain Operations

• Aptos Network has recently reported an outage that lasted for five hours. 

• According to the latest report, the team has since fixed the issue, with the network operating normally. 

It was recently reported that the Aptos Network tracker, on-chain transactions on the Move language-based blockchain suffered a 5-hour outage exactly at 11:11 pm UTC on Oct. 18 at block 104621314. The team announced to its followers on the X platform that it is working to resolve the issue. 

Your energy for Aptos One was so electric, you cut the lights! What that means at the moment is that transactions on the network have been impacted. We are working diligently to resolve the issue and will keep you updated upon completion.

According to the latest report, Aptos has resumed operation. The outage affected the operations of several crypto exchanges including OKX announcing a temporal suspension of deposits and withdrawals. According to the initial announcement, the deposit and withdrawal would be resumed once it is confirmed that the network is stable after maintenance.

Please note that there will not be a separate announcement regarding the resumption of these services.

To ensure the security of your funds, do not make any further withdrawals or deposits of APTOS tokens and related tokens in the APTOS network during the maintenance period.

Aptos Joins the List of Projects Facing Outages

Aptos was built by former Meta employees and was launched on Oct. 17, 2022. Just recently, Theta Network was also reported to have stopped operation for several hours. The team explained that the node upgrade led to the creation of an “edge case bug” to cause a block on the main chain. It was later reported that the team had fixed the issue and the network was running normally. In September, Coinbase’s layer 2 network, Base, suffered its first major outage causing no new block to be produced for 45 minutes. 

Following this, Matt Willemsen, head of research at crypto education platform Collective Shift, stated that the Ethereum layer 2 network is not as battle-tested as the Ethereum mainnet. 

Coinbase’s Base chain just had its first major outage, lasting for 43 minutes. Blocks have just started to be produced again. Another reminder that using Ethereum L2s (e.g. Arbitrum One, OP Mainnet, zkSync Era, Base) is NOT the same as using Ethereum mainnet, which is more battle-tested and involves fewer trust assumptions. I’m not saying don’t use L2s, of course! But just know what you’re dealing with.

Aptos Labs recently announced a partnership agreement with Microsoft to overcome hurdles of adoption. As part of the deal, Aptos would introduce Aptos Assistant to bridge web2 to web3 for everyday internet users and organizations. Also, both parties agreed to explore innovative solutions such as “asset tokenization, payments, and Central Bank Digital Currencies.”
