The artificial intelligence company xAI has announced the launch of its API, providing developers with programmatic access to the Grok series of foundation models. This development marks a significant step for xAI, as it opens up new possibilities for developers to leverage the capabilities of Grok in their applications, according to x.ai.
Details of the Grok Model
The public beta release includes a preview of a new Grok model, provisionally named grok-beta, which is currently in the final stages of development. This model boasts a context length of 128,000 tokens and supports both function calling and system prompts. xAI plans to release further details about the model soon. Furthermore, a multi-modal version of the grok-beta, capable of ingesting images, is expected to be available next week.
Free Credits for Beta Users
To encourage testing and feedback, xAI is offering $25 of free API credits per month to all users participating in the public beta program until the end of the year. Additionally, users who have previously purchased prepaid credits will receive an equivalent amount of free monthly credits. For instance, a customer with $50 in prepaid credits will receive $75 in total credits for November and December.
API Compatibility and Documentation
xAI’s API is designed to be fully compatible with those provided by OpenAI and Anthropic, which simplifies the migration process for developers. The transition is made easy by merely changing the base_url
to https://api.x.ai/v1
while using the xAI API key generated on their platform. Comprehensive documentation is available to guide developers through the integration process.
