  • Gaming giant Ubisoft will be a corporate ‘baker’ on Tezos, validating transactions and adding them to the Tezos blockchain.
  • Ubisoft partnered on the initiative with Nomadic Labs, one of the largest research and development centers within the Tezos ecosystem.

French gaming giant Ubisoft has joined the Tezos blockchain as a corporate baker. Ubisoft, whose games include the wildly popular Assasin’s Creed, has partnered with Nomadic Labs on the initiative. The company intends to further explore the opportunities that blockchain technology presents.

Unlike on proof-of-work blockchain networks like Bitcoin, Tezos doesn’t have miners. Rather, Tezos employs a ‘liquid proof of stake‘ consensus mechanism in which bakers validate new transactions and add them to the Tezos public blockchain. Some of the prominent companies that act as validators on Tezos include Coinbase, Binance, Kraken and Bitfinex.

Ubisoft has partnered with Nomadic Labs, a leading research and development center on the Tezos ecosystem. Nomadic Labs, based in Paris, works with companies to enable them to integrate the Tezos blockchain for their business needs.

Michel Mauny, the Nomadic Labs president commented, “This announcement proves once again that the Tezos ecosystem is one of the most active in the world. We are delighted to have worked with the Ubisoft Strategic Innovation Lab on their exploration of Tezos.”

He added:

Ubisoft is one of the first large companies to show interest in blockchain technology by testing several protocols through the years and we are happy to welcome them in our ecosystem. Their experience and vision will be an asset in the Tezos community.

Ubisoft continues to explore blockchain technology

Ubisoft is one of the world’s biggest and most renowned gaming companies. Its video game franchises include Prince of Persia, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Rayman and Rabbids. Its standout franchise is Assasin’s Creed which has sold over 140 million copies globally, making it one of the highest-selling video game franchises of all time.

The company is excited at becoming a corporate baker on Tezos, its blockchain initiative director Nicolas Pouard revealed.

Ubisoft believes that blockchain has the potential to bring new possibilities to players and developers alike, and this new collaboration will allow us to pursue our innovation efforts with an ecosystem that aligns with our environmental-friendly approach thanks to its proof-of-stake consensus algorithm.

The French company has explored blockchain technology in the past. In 2018, the French gaming company launched a prototype of Hashcraft, a Minecraft-inspired blockchain treasure hunting game. Hashcraft is decentralized – it runs on the shared computational power of all its players, not on central servers like most games.

Ubisoft was also the first major gaming company on Ultra’s – a games distribution platform – distributed ledger technology. Nicolas Gilot, the Ultra founder and CEO remarked at the time:

Their [Ubisoft] years-long dedication to exploring blockchain technology ensures they have the knowledge and skills to be excellent block producers.
