Sotheby’s is taking another big step into the NFT space, this time focusing on eight curated NBA Top Shot moments highlighting rookie highlights. With prices ranging between $500 and $3,000, each collection highlights outstanding performances from emerging artists like Jaylen Wells and Kyshawn George.
Despite recent sales data indicating lingering caution among collectors, the auction, set to conclude on January 21, 2025, coincides with a gradual recovery in the NFT market. Despite the renewed hype, NBA Top Shot’s December 2024 sales barely reached $2 million, a significant departure from its peak years.

Sotheby’s Strategic Move to Reignite Interest in NBA Top Shot NFTs
Launched in 2020, NBA Top Shot, a digital marketplace enabling fans to purchase, sell, and trade formally licensed NBA moments, transformed the sports collectibles market. Early in 2021 it peaked, producing nearly $226 million in February of that year.
The market has lately calmed, though, and trade volumes have dropped dramatically. Using its well-known platform to add reputation and credibility to the offers, Sotheby’s auction of these rookie highlights marks an attempt to reengage both committed collectors and casual fans.
The auction seems to have a planned timing. Sotheby’s wants to lead the way in this rebound as demand in digital goods steadily picks up steam. Focusing on rookies allows the auction to appeal to a particular market known for future value.
Rookie NFTs draw interest since, should the highlighted players excel in their careers, they could become sought-after assets. Sotheby’s collaboration also shows how traditional art institutions are embracing digital assets in line with more general changes in the art and antiques markets.
On the other hand, CNF previously reported a novel action taken by Indian Railways to include NFTs in MahaKumbh 2025 ticketing. This project combines the rich cultural and spiritual legacy of pilgrimage travels with the low-cost, environmentally friendly technology of the Polygon blockchain.
Offering NFT-based tickets, Indian Railways hopes to improve the travel experience while preserving strong customs.
