- The IOTA Foundation and Dell Technologies are partnering on Project Alvarium, and building a digital tool for real-time measurement, reporting, and verification of environmental impact.
- Through Project Alvarium, IOTA and Dell will track and verify data related to climate change, providing transparency and trust in carbon footprint tracking.
The IOTA Foundation has been one of the active players in the blockchain industry participating in different green energy projects and contributing towards reducing the carbon footprint. One such major partnership that the IOTA Foundation has is with Dell Technologies where the two players are working together on Project Alvarium.
Project Alvarium basically helps by providing a data-driven solution for the real-time tracking of carbon footprints. Earlier this week on Wednesday, June 7, Dell Edge Solutions announced the onboarding of IOTA along with BioE and climate change-focused technology company ClimateCHECK in building a solution on top of Dell’s in-house Data Confidence Fabric (DCF) and Project Alvarium initiatives.

Both IOTA and Dell Technologies first conceptualized Preject Alvarium back in 2019. The goal was to use the vetted data from the DCF or “trust fabric,” across heterogeneous systems.
Project Alvarium is an open-source initiative that aims to build trust and enable secure data sharing for various applications, industries, and businesses. It offers tools for monitoring and verifying critical information, ensuring transparency. The project’s objective is to effectively monetize and share data while addressing global challenges like climate change. It has the potential to benefit multiple sectors and promote responsible data practices.
Under Project Alvarium, IOTA and Dell will be able to trace the carbon footprint of different industry players in real-time.
Bringing Transparency And Trust to Climate Action Data
There have been multiple initiatives behind tracking the carbon footprint contribution of different industrial players. However, one of the biggest grey areas is regarding the transparency and trust of such carbon footprint tracking systems.
IOTA solves this firsthand by leveraging its powerful distributed ledger technology (DLT) while offering real-time tracking of the data. Mathew Yarger, head of sustainability at the Iota Foundation, said: “Transparency and trust in data is paramount for addressing the global issues of climate change and transitioning to climate action.”

Yarger shared information about the initiative, stating that the four companies collaborated to create a digital tool for measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV). This tool, in conjunction with Project Alvarium, can collect data from various sources like sensors and manual input.
The data is then processed using Dell PowerEdge servers to provide timely insights into the carbon footprints of BioE’s sustainable energy and composting facility. The digital MRV enables near-real-time monitoring and analysis of environmental impact. Yagner added:
