The New Year is here! After what seemed like five years packed into one, we have managed to leave 2021 behind us. We are now in 2022 and it could be the biggest year yet in the cryptocurrency and blockchain world.
This year will see some of the facets of the crypto industry mature and become more mainstream. DeFi will definitely have a big year ahead as it stretches into the traditional financial space. Institutional players are getting into the game, with even banks like SEBA joining the AAVE community.
NFTs will have an even bigger year. The industry started last year great with Beeple grabbing global attention after his $69 million NFT sales. It then took a dip but has finished the year strong as NFTs became an everybody-is-invited-to-join kind of sector. This year, more brands will get into NFTs, and we’ve already seen it with Coca-Cola, Adidas, Dolce & Gabbana, and more releasing NFTs. They will become one of the most popular ways brands interact with and incentivize their customers.
Still, on brands’ interaction with consumers, the metaverse and Web3 will take a central role. Already, the metaverse is becoming a buzzword for every other company, and this will only shoot up in 2022. It allows consumers to interact with surroundings, other consumers, brands, locations, and more in a realistic way, and this could be a game-changer. Mark Zuckerberg certainly believes so and he’s betting the future of his trillion-dollar company on it.
2022 will also be the year in which we finally get to upgrade to Ethereum 2.0, and with it, new opportunities will arise. Ethereum developers will be able to finally build projects that scale to meet the needs of the masses without having to rely on Layer 2 protocols like Polygon.
And of course, there’s Bitcoin. Could this be the year in which it breaks $100,000, or even $200,000? Brock Pierce, the chair of the Bitcoin Foundation, certainly thinks so.
