The Transparency Center has been updated with data from the first half of 2024, showing a notable increase in DMCA takedowns. The platform processed 1,041 DMCA notices and took down 18,472 projects in H1 2024, compared to 964 notices and 6,358 projects in H2 2023. This significant jump is largely attributed to a single takedown event.

This paper, authored by members of GitHub’s Trust and Safety, Legal, and Policy teams, explores the unique considerations of moderating a code collaboration platform. It includes diverse case studies and discusses how advancements in AI may present new challenges and opportunities for maintaining developer-first standards at scale.
