Circle’s CCTP now supports upfront fee payments for USDC transfers, simplifying crosschain transactions and ensuring predictable amounts for users.
Circle has introduced a new feature to its Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) that allows developers to quote and collect fees upfront for USDC transfers. This update, announced on September 10, 2026, aims to simplify crosschain transactions by enabling predictable transfer amounts and a smoother user experience.
The enhancement allows fees for CCTP Fast Transfers to be paid in advance using either the source chain’s native gas token or USDC. Previously, fees were deducted from the transferred amount on the destination chain, which often led to discrepancies between the sent and received amount of USDC. With this change, users will now receive the exact amount of USDC intended, making the process more transparent and reliable for wallets, payment workflows, and decentralized applications.
Why This Matters
Predictable fee structures are a significant improvement for crosschain transactions, addressing three major challenges:
- Predictable Transfers: Users receive exactly what they expect, eliminating surprises caused by destination-side fee deductions.
- Streamlined Fee Calculations: Through Circle’s Quote API, developers can bundle all associated fees into a single upfront quote, removing the need for custom infrastructure to calculate multiple protocol costs.
- Flexible Payment Options: Fees can be paid without touching the transferred USDC balance, preserving its full value for the recipient.
Integration and Availability
The upfront fee payment option is now available for USDC transfers across all EVM-compatible chains supported by CCTP. However, while transfers to Solana are supported, transfers originating from Solana are not yet part of this update. Developers looking to integrate this feature can utilize Circle’s Quote API to obtain fee estimates and begin building predictable transfer workflows immediately.
Strategic Context
This move builds on Circle’s long-term effort to improve crosschain liquidity and reduce fragmentation of USDC. CCTP, introduced in April 2023 and upgraded to its current version (V2) in March 2025, uses a burn-and-mint mechanism to ensure 1:1 parity of USDC across chains, eliminating reliance on wrapped tokens. By November 2025, CCTP had processed over $110 billion in cumulative volume across 5.3 million transfers, cementing its role as a crucial infrastructure for the stablecoin.
USDC, currently valued at $1.00 with a market cap of $74.19 billion (as of September 8, 2026), remains a dominant force in the stablecoin market. Enhancements like upfront fee payments further strengthen its appeal for crosschain payments and integrations in decentralized finance (DeFi) and enterprise use cases.

Developers and integrators can explore Circle’s CCTP documentation for detailed guidance on implementing upfront fee payments. While Solana-originated transfers remain unsupported for now, the feature could expand to other chains as adoption grows. With crosschain transfer volumes continuing to rise, these updates position CCTP as a key enabler for seamless blockchain interoperability.
