Bitcoin surged 25% in August 2026, driven by liquidity improvements, ETF flows, and a short squeeze. Key price risks linger in September.
Bitcoin (BTC) recorded its best August performance since 2017, surging roughly 25% to close the month near $80,000. As of September 4, BTC is trading at $80,681, up another 3.7% over the past 24 hours, according to market data.
The rally began in early August, when weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data pushed Bitcoin to a monthly high of $65,300 on August 7. This data reduced expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September, providing a risk-on boost to markets. By late August, Bitcoin had broken sharply higher, with analysts attributing the move to a combination of improved liquidity expectations, U.S. Treasury bond buybacks, and institutional demand tied to ETF-related flows.
One notable driver was a substantial short squeeze that reportedly liquidated around $1.4 billion in bearish leveraged positions. Analysts at 21Shares noted that the rally appeared to be more spot-driven than leverage-driven, suggesting a potentially more sustainable demand base. Market participants have pointed to falling bond yields and shifts in macroeconomic conditions as additional factors supporting Bitcoin’s climb. Institutional players reportedly returned to the market, with ETF-related flows adding momentum. These factors created favorable conditions for Bitcoin to break through key resistance levels.
