All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • Kraken institutional clients gain access to 24/7 USD settlement through SoFi.
  • Kraken Prime becomes an additional liquidity source for SoFi crypto trades.
  • Kraken will list SoFiUSD for retail, professional and institutional clients.
  • The partnership puts SoFi’s broader 2026 digital asset strategy into use at scale.

SoFi Technologies and Kraken parent Payward have formed a strategic partnership connecting 24/7 banking infrastructure with crypto liquidity and stablecoin markets. Announced September 3, the agreement brings Payward onto the SoFi Exchange Network (SEN), gives Kraken institutional clients access to real-time U.S. dollar settlement and adds Kraken Prime as a liquidity source for crypto trades made through SoFi. Kraken will also list SoFiUSD.

Kraken brings institutional flow to SoFi’s banking rails

The most important part of the agreement for institutional clients is Payward’s entry into the SoFi Exchange Network.

SEN provides real-time U.S. dollar settlement 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Connecting Kraken to those rails means institutional clients can move dollars and manage liquidity across both networks outside conventional banking hours.

That addresses a practical mismatch in digital asset markets. Crypto trades continuously, but the banking infrastructure supporting institutional positions does not always operate on the same schedule.

For a trading firm managing positions overnight or during weekends, access to dollars can affect how quickly capital can be redeployed when volatility rises.

SoFi is positioning its nationally chartered bank as part of that solution.

The company launched SoFi Big Business Banking in April 2026, combining traditional enterprise banking with digital asset capabilities on one regulated platform. Its initial ecosystem included Cumberland, Bullish, BitGo, B2C2, Fireblocks, Wintermute, Galaxy, Jupiter and Mastercard.

Kraken now gives that infrastructure direct exposure to another large institutional crypto network.

Kraken Prime could improve SoFi’s crypto execution

SoFi receives something different from the partnership: additional access to crypto liquidity.

Kraken Prime will operate as another liquidity source behind trades placed through the SoFi app. Customers will continue buying and selling crypto through SoFi, while Kraken’s institutional infrastructure contributes to execution behind the interface.

SoFi says the integration is expected to provide better pricing on those trades.

That is more commercially relevant than simply adding another crypto partner.

SoFi has 15.8 million members, while SoFi Tech Solutions serves more than 134 million accounts globally.

Payward operates a shared infrastructure layer behind Kraken and other businesses including NinjaTrader, xStocks and CF Benchmarks.

Payward says that architecture combines a global liquidity pool, unified risk and margin engine, collateral and settlement system, and common compliance framework.

The partnership therefore allows SoFi to tap established crypto-market infrastructure while keeping its own app and customer relationship at the front end.

SoFiUSD gets another route beyond SoFi

Kraken will also list SoFiUSD, expanding the stablecoin to millions of retail, professional and institutional users.

The token is issued by SoFi Bank and redeemable one-to-one for U.S. dollars.

The Kraken listing follows another major 2026 distribution agreement.

In March, SoFi partnered with Mastercard to enable SoFiUSD as a settlement option across Mastercard’s global payments network. The companies are exploring its use for issuer and acquirer settlement, while Galileo is expected to offer eligible clients and issuing banks the ability to settle transactions using the stablecoin.

Those partnerships give SoFiUSD access to two very different markets.

Mastercard provides a route into payments. Kraken provides a route into crypto trading and institutional digital asset liquidity.

That makes external usage one of the most important numbers to watch. Circulating supply can show how much SoFiUSD has been issued, but transfer activity, trading liquidity and settlement usage will provide better evidence of whether the token is developing demand beyond SoFi’s own ecosystem.

SoFi is building two forms of always-on dollars

The combination of SEN and SoFiUSD also shows how SoFi is approaching money movement from two directions.

SEN provides real-time settlement through banking infrastructure. SoFiUSD provides a dollar-denominated asset that can move over public blockchain networks.

The two systems are not interchangeable, but they target a similar operational problem: moving dollar liquidity without being constrained by traditional settlement windows.

Kraken gives SoFi a market where both approaches can become useful.

Institutional clients gain access to SEN for USD liquidity management, while Kraken users gain access to SoFiUSD as an onchain dollar asset.

For SoFi, the opportunity is to make its banking infrastructure relevant to businesses that already operate across both fiat and crypto rather than forcing them to maintain completely separate financial systems.

The competitive advantage depends on actual usage

The September agreement arrives only five months after SoFi launched Big Business Banking, so there is not yet enough data to judge whether SEN can become a significant institutional settlement network.

The partnership does, however, give SoFi a meaningful distribution test.

Kraken institutional clients can generate settlement activity. Kraken Prime can support SoFi’s consumer crypto execution. Kraken’s exchange can provide external liquidity and distribution for SoFiUSD.

The performance indicators are therefore relatively clear:

  • SEN settlement activity will show whether institutions are adopting SoFi’s always-on banking rails.
  • SoFiUSD volume and external circulation will show whether Kraken and Mastercard are creating demand outside SoFi.
  • Execution quality inside the SoFi app will indicate whether additional Kraken Prime liquidity improves the trading product.

There is also room for the relationship to deepen. SoFi and Payward specifically identified payments, treasury, lending and digital assets as areas where they could work together over time, with qualified custody capabilities available as the partnership expands.

Those additions remain future possibilities rather than current products.

For now, the more significant development is that SoFi’s 2026 crypto strategy is moving beyond product launches. Big Business Banking, SEN and SoFiUSD now have an external partner capable of supplying institutional settlement demand, crypto liquidity and exchange distribution at the same time.

Whether that becomes a competitive advantage will depend on the flows that follow the announcement.
