All news is rigorously fact-checked and reviewed by leading blockchain experts and seasoned industry insiders.
  • Coinbase will provide Webull’s underlying crypto trading and custody infrastructure.
  • Webull Canada initially lists 10 digital assets.
  • Crypto holdings are not protected by Canada’s CIPF.
  • Canada joins Webull’s existing crypto rollout in the U.S., Brazil and Australia.

Webull is expanding crypto trading into Canada through a new phase of its partnership with Coinbase, giving Canadian clients access to digital assets alongside the brokerage’s existing stocks, ETFs and options. Coinbase will operate the underlying trading and custody infrastructure through its Crypto-as-a-Service platform rather than requiring Webull to build those systems independently.

Coinbase will sit behind Webull’s crypto service

The partnership separates the customer-facing brokerage from much of the infrastructure needed to execute and safeguard crypto trades.

Webull remains the platform through which Canadian customers interact with the service. Behind it, Coinbase provides custody, liquidity and trading infrastructure.

That arrangement matters because adding crypto to a brokerage involves more than displaying another asset class in an app. The provider needs wallet and custody infrastructure, access to liquidity, transaction processing and systems capable of operating within Canada’s crypto regulatory framework.

Using Crypto-as-a-Service allows Webull to integrate those functions without operating a standalone crypto stack for each country it enters.

For Coinbase, the arrangement creates another distribution channel for its infrastructure business. It can service investors who remain inside Webull’s ecosystem rather than requiring those users to open a separate Coinbase trading account.

Webull starts with 10 cryptocurrencies

Webull Canada’s initial offering includes 10 cryptocurrencies, with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana among the available assets. The platform also indicates that additional cryptocurrencies can be added.

The relatively small initial selection is notable compared with crypto-native exchanges that can list dozens or hundreds of tokens.

Webull is entering Canada from the opposite direction. It already provides conventional investments and is adding a limited crypto menu to the same broader brokerage experience.

That makes the launch particularly relevant to investors who want exposure to major cryptocurrencies without moving their entire investment activity to a crypto-only platform.

The important protection investors do not get

Webull Canada Crypto Limited is regulated by the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and became an investment dealer member effective June 17, 2026. Canadian securities regulators also list the company as an authorized crypto asset trading platform.

It is also a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

There is an important distinction, however: Crypto assets themselves are not covered by CIPF protection.

Webull explicitly states this in its Canadian disclosures.

That means investors should not interpret Webull’s CIPF membership as insurance against losses involving their BTC, ETH or other crypto holdings.

Coinbase Canada operates under a separate regulatory status. Coinbase Canada Inc. is registered as a Restricted Dealer across Canada’s provinces and territories, while Coinbase provides the infrastructure supporting Webull’s crypto product.

The distinction is useful for customers: Webull provides the investment interface, Coinbase supplies core crypto infrastructure, and the regulatory protections attached to traditional securities should not automatically be assumed to apply to the crypto assets.

Canadian crypto ownership has jumped to 25%

Webull and Coinbase are expanding their partnership into a market where crypto participation has grown considerably.

Coinbase cited recent Ontario Securities Commission research showing that Canadian crypto ownership reached 25%, up from 10% in 2023.

That is a 15-percentage-point increase and means the reported ownership rate is now 2.5 times its 2023 level.

For Webull, this changes the role crypto can play inside a conventional brokerage.

When ownership was closer to one in ten Canadians, crypto could remain a relatively specialized addition. At one in four, excluding it creates a larger product gap for platforms trying to keep multiple asset classes under one account experience.

The competitive question is therefore shifting from whether brokerages should offer crypto toward how they provide it without building exchange and custody infrastructure themselves.

Canada extends an existing Webull-Coinbase model

The companies are not testing this arrangement for the first time.

Coinbase infrastructure already supports Webull’s crypto capabilities in the United States, Australia and Brazil.

Canada becomes another market using the same underlying partnership.

That gives the expansion significance beyond the 10 tokens available at launch.

Crypto-as-a-Service lets a conventional brokerage keep control of its customer relationship while outsourcing specialized crypto functions to an established infrastructure provider. Coinbase, meanwhile, gains access to trading activity generated inside another financial platform without having to acquire those customers directly.

If that model continues to expand, the competitive boundary between brokerages and crypto exchanges becomes less clear. A platform does not necessarily need to operate its own exchange infrastructure to offer crypto, while infrastructure providers can grow transaction and custody businesses without every end user becoming a direct retail customer.

For Canadian investors, the more immediate distinction is simpler: Webull is adding crypto to an existing multi-asset brokerage, but the assets still carry a different protection framework from the securities sitting beside them.
