As the New York City mayoral election approaches, a pro-digital assets organization, Innovate NY, has thrown its support behind Andrew Cuomo, the former state governor running as an independent candidate. According to Cointelegraph, the organization has invested significantly in promoting Cuomo’s candidacy.
Innovate NY’s Endorsement
Innovate NY, a political group advocating for digital assets, announced its endorsement of Cuomo in a recent notice. The group, funded with nearly $100,000, supports a platform that includes blockchain technology, tokenization, public-benefit stablecoins, and artificial intelligence. The endorsement comes as early voting is underway, with the election scheduled for November 4.
In its efforts to back Cuomo, Innovate NY has spent $30,000 on campaign materials, specifically targeting Democrat Zohran Mamdani, who currently leads in many polls. The organization is registered as an independent spender with the New York City Campaign Finance Board, receiving contributions from six individuals through two companies.
Impact on New York’s Tech Scene
The mayoral race has captured the attention of the crypto industry, given New York City’s status as a major economic hub. A victory for Cuomo could signify a shift towards more crypto-friendly policies in the city. Cuomo has promised to establish an Innovation Council, which would include advisory committees for crypto, AI, and biotechnology, should he be elected.
In contrast, Mamdani has focused his campaign on addressing cost-of-living issues such as childcare and affordable housing, rather than digital assets. The Republican candidate, Curtis Sliwa, also remains a contender in the race.
Eric Adams’ Crypto Legacy
Current Mayor Eric Adams, who has been an advocate for blockchain and crypto policies, will not seek reelection. During his tenure, Adams hosted a crypto summit and established a digital advisory council. He also signed an executive order to create a digital assets and blockchain office, underscoring his commitment to integrating these technologies into the city’s framework.
Adams’ departure opens the field for a new leadership stance on digital assets, with the incoming mayor set to take office on January 1, 2026. The outcome of this election could potentially define the future direction of crypto policy in New York City.
