NVIDIA and General Atomics, in collaboration with scientific partners, leverage AI to create a digital twin for fusion reactors, accelerating the path towards limitless clean energy.

NVIDIA and General Atomics, in partnership with several prestigious scientific institutions, including UC San Diego, Argonne, and NERSC, have announced a significant advancement in fusion energy research. The companies have developed a high-fidelity digital twin of a fusion reactor, enabled by artificial intelligence, to simulate and optimize fusion processes more efficiently, according to NVIDIA’s official blog.

AI-Powered Digital Twin for Fusion Reactors

This project, revealed at the NVIDIA GTC conference in Washington, D.C., utilizes the capabilities of Polaris at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility and Perlmutter at the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) to train AI models that predict plasma behavior in fusion reactors. The NVIDIA Omniverse platform, along with CUDA-X libraries and data center GPUs, plays a critical role in this groundbreaking effort.

The digital twin provides a virtual environment where researchers can explore different scenarios and refine techniques without the risk of damaging actual reactors. Raffi Nazikian, the fusion data science lead at General Atomics, emphasized the transformative potential of this digital twin, suggesting it could expedite the journey towards viable fusion energy.

AI Models Reducing Simulation Time

Traditionally, simulating plasma behavior, which involves controlling extremely hot and dynamic plasma, has been a time-consuming process. However, the AI surrogate models developed by General Atomics, trained on decades of data, can now predict plasma behavior in seconds. These models, such as EFIT for plasma equilibrium and ION ORB for heat density, allow for real-time adjustments to maintain plasma stability, thus reducing potential damage and speeding up research.

Running on NVIDIA GPUs, these models enhance the accuracy and speed of predictions compared to traditional physics-based simulations. This advancement is pivotal in the quest to harness fusion energy, which promises an almost inexhaustible supply of clean energy by replicating the sun’s power generation process.

Digital Twin: The Future of Fusion Research

The collaboration between NVIDIA and General Atomics aims to construct a fully interactive digital twin of the DIII-D National Fusion Facility within NVIDIA Omniverse. This digital twin integrates sensor data, physics simulations, engineering models, and AI to create a real-time, interactive platform that enhances decision-making processes.

The synchronized digital twin allows scientists from over 100 organizations to test hypotheses and conduct “what-if” analyses without impacting the physical reactor. This innovative approach is expected to significantly accelerate the development of commercial fusion energy solutions.

Implications for Future Energy Solutions

This initiative marks a paradigm shift in fusion research, moving it from being purely a physics challenge to one that leverages advanced computing and AI. The transition from weeks-long simulations to instantaneous interactive responses positions the digital twin as a crucial tool in rapidly testing new ideas and optimizing reactor designs.

By transforming the pace of fusion research, NVIDIA and General Atomics are paving the way for faster deployment of commercial fusion energy, potentially providing a sustainable and clean energy source for future generations.
