GitHub Unveils Model Context Protocol (MCP) in VS Code

GitHub has announced the general availability of Model Context Protocol (MCP) support in Visual Studio Code (VS Code), marking a significant enhancement for developers using GitHub Copilot. This development enables the integration of external tools and data sources, thereby expanding the capabilities of Copilot to provide a more context-aware coding experience, according to GitHub.

MCP Integration with GitHub Copilot

With the release of VS Code version 1.102, MCP support has transitioned from preview mode to full production use. Policy Changes for Organizations

Instead, it is now managed by the MCP servers in Copilot policy. This policy is initially disabled and requires activation by an organization or enterprise administrator. The original Editor Preview Features policy will continue to manage MCP access in other editors where MCP is still in public preview, such as Visual Studio, Eclipse, and JetBrains IDEs.
