BNB Chain’s Maxwell Hardfork: BSC Speeds Up with 0.75-Second Block Times

BNB Chain’s latest upgrade, known as the Maxwell hardfork, is set to significantly enhance the speed and efficiency of the BNB Smart Chain (BSC). According to the BNB Chain blog, this development will reduce block times from 1.5 seconds to an impressive 0.75 seconds, marking a pivotal step in improving transaction speeds and network responsiveness.

Key Proposals and Enhancements

The Maxwell upgrade is underpinned by three critical proposals: BEP-524, BEP-563, and BEP-564. These proposals aim to refine core aspects of the blockchain’s speed and reliability. With this upgrade, BSC will see improvements such as reduced block intervals, enhanced validator communication, and accelerated block syncing between nodes, benefiting all network participants including users, developers, validators, and node operators.

Historical Context and Achievements

Prior to Maxwell, the Lorentz hardfork had already halved BSC block times from 3 seconds to 1.5 seconds, setting the stage for faster decentralized finance (DeFi) operations and a smoother user experience. Since Lorentz, BNB Chain has maintained an average transaction fee of $0.04 and achieved the top rank in daily decentralized exchange (DEX) volume, as reported by Dune Analytics.

Technical Details of BEP Proposals

BEP-524: 0.75-Second Block Intervals

This proposal introduces a reduced block interval of 0.75 seconds, which will accelerate transaction confirmations, enhance decentralized application (dApp) responsiveness, and facilitate smoother interactions in DeFi and GameFi sectors.

BEP-563: Enhanced Validator Network

With faster blocks, BEP-563 focuses on improving peer-to-peer messaging between validators, ensuring quicker block proposal communications and reducing the risk of missed votes or synchronization delays.

BEP-564: Smarter Block Fetching

BEP-564 introduces new message types in the bsc/2 protocol to significantly improve sync speeds across the network, allowing for more efficient block fetching.

Impact on Users and Developers

For users, transactions will become nearly instantaneous, enhancing the overall experience in swaps, mints, and other dApp interactions. Developers will benefit from lower latency, which opens up new possibilities for dApp design, although they may need to adjust time-based logic to avoid potential issues.

Validators and node operators can expect a slight increase in computational demand. The Maxwell hardfork introduces adjustments to consensus parameters to support faster blocks, such as increasing the epoch length and turn length, ultimately improving finality and confirmation times.

The testnet hardfork is scheduled for May 26, 2025, with the mainnet hardfork planned for June 30, 2025. Node operators, developers, and validators are advised to prepare for these changes by upgrading software, testing dApp compatibility, and assessing system performance ahead of these dates.
